Imus Virus Strikes NYPD
By Tracy Stokes, BET.com Staff Writer & Wire Services

Posted April 25, 2007 – The Imus virus apparently has spread to the New York City Police Department.

Three female NYPD officers – two Black and one Hispanic – say a male sergeant and an officer in their department , who are Hispanic, have obviously taken cues from fired, shock jock Don Imus, because their supervisors, during a recent roll call at their stationhouse, called them “hos,” The Associated Press reports.

The three women – officers Tronnette Jackson and Karen Nelson, who are Black, and Maria Gomez, who is Hispanic, said the incident happened where Abner Louima was assaulted a number of years ago – the 70th Precinct stationhouse in Brooklyn. It was April 15, a few days after Imus was fired by MSNBC and CBS Radio for describing members of the mostly Black Rutgers Women’s Basketball Team as “nappy headed hos” on his nationally syndicated radio show.

Celebrating One Year of Loose-Nappy Hair and Sharing My Journey With You!

April 25, 2007 · 2 Comments

I’ve actually documented my hair journey for an entire year. Can’t believe it. When it comes to stuff like journaling and such, I’ve never been able to do it with much consistency. I remember trying to keep a diary as a child. I got one for Christmas when I was 10 years old. It was red and had a little lock and key. I think I wrote maybe one or two entries and uh…yeah…never bothered with it again, cause I could never think of anything to write about.

Then, when I attended graduate school out of state, I started writing my friends these extremely long-winded letters. Had plenty to say then. Later, I learned that a couple of my friends kept journals and I was amazed that they could just randomly write about their lives and keep that up on a consistent basis. From that point on, I would try my hand at journaling periodically, but could never do so consistently. Guess I still didn’t have much to say.

One Year of Nappy Dos

April 21, 2007 · 4 Comments

When I first embarked on my loose-haired napptural journey about 14 months ago, I didn’t have a clue about what to do with my nappy hair. It’s not like I was a stranger to doing nappy since, as a teenager, I used to braid hair around the neighborhood for extra money. Fast forward to 2003, after I moved back to my hometown, my sister frequently looked to me to style her daughter’s hair. Problem was, I couldn’t quite translate that ability into being able to do my own hair. Once I asked my sister to do my hair. She can’t part to save her life, but she can do some great flat twists. So we did this marathon hair session with me parting and her twisting, and after that she would never do it again…always had some excuse why she couldn’t or didn’t want to do it. That’s when I realized that if I wanted to wear my hair natural, I was just going to have to learn how to do it myself.

So, I started frequenting Nappturality and other online hair sites, and thanks to other napptural ladies’ willingness to share their hair care and styling tips on the forum and via their hair albums, I became inspired to learn how to do my own hair. I have to say that my early attempts were, well interesting. But I was committed to learning how to do my own hair, and that involved learning how to do some of the most basic styling techniques… like flat twists.

I persevered. I think I’ve managed to come up with the cutest styles that suit me to a T. So a couple of days ago, I put them all in a slideshow, partly to show them off cause I think they’re soo cute, and also to give folks a look-see at how versatile nappy hair is when it comes to styling.

So here they are, one year of my favorite nappy dos. Please enjoy!

DJ fired for repeating Imus’ comments

‘Gary in the Morning’ of Allentown, Pa., encouraged listeners to say phrase

Updated: 4:19 p.m. CT April 12, 2007

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – A radio station fired its longtime morning DJ Wednesday after he encouraged listeners to repeat talk-show host Don Imus’ racially charged comments in an on-air contest.

Gary Smith told WSBG-FM listeners to call and say “I’m a nappy-headed ho” for Tuesday’s “Phrase that Pays” contest, said Rick Musselman, executive vice president of station owner Nassau Broadcasting Partners L.P.

Musselman said three of the listeners who called were awarded tickets to a NASCAR promotion at a local club.

Station management reviewed a tape of the broadcast of the “Gary in the Morning” show and fired Smith, Musselman said.

Musselman said that Smith was fired and not suspended because he uttered the slur in a premeditated manner, “with full knowledge of the reaction to Don Imus’ use of the exact same phrase.”

Attempts by The Associated Press to reach Smith for comment were unsuccessful. But he told The Morning Call of Allentown he regretted the comment.

“What I said was stupid, and I’m sorry,” Smith told the newspaper.

Wow! Imus is History! Time To REALLY go After Hip Hop and Rap Now!

I should be overcome with joy
I have to collect my thoughts on this. I should be really happy cause I NEVER in a MILLION years thought the white power structure would step up to the plate and right a grievous wrong. But really happy is not how I feel at the moment. Part of the problem is that I don’t think he gets it… you know? He thinks he’s a good person, and so do a whole lot of other white folks. For sure, there will be weeping in the streets today for him. I can never understand why white folks by and large NEVER think anything like this is really all that horrible. Seems like we go ’round and ’round in circles in debates over stuff like this with white folks on one side of the issue and black folks on the other. It’s never until there’s some sort of adverse economic impact that they will begrudgingly change their ways. This time was no different. I believe that if big sponsors hadn’t pulled the plug, Imus would still be packing to go on his two-week vacation right now. Honestly, I don’t think internal pressure at the big networks alone would have been enough to get rid of him. The money had to dry up first. Then put it all together… the public outcry, defecting sponsors plus internal pressure from within the ranks at NBC, MSNBC and CBS created the right atmosphere to help topple one of the most influential media personalities ever. Hopefully this will be a wake up call to all those other shock jocks and anyone else who thinks they can just say anything they want about blacks and other minorities, including women and especially black women and not have to face any serious consequences.
